Senior Fellow, Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies

The Brookings Institution

Job Code: B4215
Locations: Washington, DC
Reference Number
: 1107

Description-
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The Brookings Institution is accepting applications for a Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies who will focus on fundraising and the development of Japan- and Korea-focused research and activities in the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies (CNAPS). Substantive foci will include the U.S.-Japan alliance, Japan’s evolving posture and roles in regional and global security, the U.S.-ROK political and military relationships, and North Korea. In collaboration with the CNAPS Director and under the supervision of the Vice President and Director for Foreign Policy Studies at Brookings, the individual would be expected to raise funds to cover this position, and to increase significantly the donor base of Brookings’s Japan and Korea programs.

The position will be guaranteed funding for the first eighteen months; extension of the position depends upon fundraising success of the Senior Fellow. As a secondary responsibility, the Senior Fellow would work on policy-related monographs and/or book projects as well as write shorter items, conduct public and private meetings and discussions, and interact with the media. As a funding base is established, the percentages of time devoted to these two main tasks would be expected to shift.

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in political science, history, government, or a related discipline, and will have either considerable (10+ years) government experience working on issues related to Japan and Korea, or a proven record of book publication and publication in professional or academic journals and newspapers. The individual will have extensive contacts in the philanthropic and/or corporate communities of Japan and Korea, and must be able to utilize these networks to secure funding for this position and for the CNAPS and FPS programs. The individual must have a proven ability to conduct cutting edge research and outreach with an impact on public policy in addition to competence to undertake and lead projects with little supervision.

We strongly encourage qualified women and minorities to apply.
(Only applicants meeting minimum qualifications for the position will be considered. No phone calls please.)
