Economic and Technology Policy Analyst Job #4001 Center for Science, Technology and Economic Development Sharjah, United Arab Emirates SRI International, founded as Stanford Research Institute in 1946, is a leading independent research institute. SRI conducts sponsored R&D for its government, business, and foundation clients in information and engineering technologies, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, chemistry and materials, education, health sciences, and economics. SRI's Center for Science, Technology and Economic Development (CSTED) (www.sri.com/policy/csted/) helps business and government clients capitalize on opportunities created by complex interaction between business, technology and economic development. Center staff develop research-based solutions to problems posed by rapid technological, business, social and economic changes. The products of our research are used to shape and optimize decision-making, support innovations and improve performance of organizations, industries, economies, and society. Building upon years of experience in the Middle East, in 2007 CSTED created an office in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. A sample of recent SRI CSTED client engagements in the region include: development of a knowledge-based industry roadmap for the Gulf Cooperation Council countries; planning and selection of technical fields for a new science-and technology-oriented university in Saudi Arabia; and feasibility study and implementation assistance for the first national information and communications technology business incubator in Saudi Arabia. Working under the supervision of the Director of Middle East Operations (based in Sharjah), the Economic and Technology Policy Analyst will be based in Sharjah, UAE and will serve as the director’s technical, managerial, and logistics assistant. The main tasks of the Economic and Technology Policy Analyst include: conduct economic and technology policy research, analyses, and develop strategies for a diverse range of clients; develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, including serving as day-to-day point of contact for routine inquiries and requests; conduct in-depth research on technology trends, industries, and other specialized economic and policy topics; write technical reports, proposals, and other documents/briefs as needed; and provide general assistance to the director in the execution of the office’s activities. Requirements: Expertise in economic development and technology policy. Must demonstrate strong research, quantitative, analytical, and writing skills. Must demonstrate capacity to handle multiple projects, requests, and activities and to act effectively as both a substantive and administrative/managerial assistant to a busy director serving numerous clients. Must be a motivated self-starter, able to produce high quality work efficiently and quickly, and able to make sound judgments under demanding conditions. Interest in and/or experience in the Middle East strongly preferred. Understanding of technology fields, applications and trends preferred. Knowledge of Arabic preferred but not required.
