National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI)

 

The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) is currently seeking applicants for two full-time intern/project assistant positions to work with its Governance team. The Governance team serves as the Institute’s resource and adviser for parliamentary and local government programs, focusing on the promotion of transparent, efficient and accountable lawmaking, as well as responsive and accessible governance. Interns/Project assistants are given substantive responsibilities and are expected to be professional contributors to the Governance team’s work. Interns/Project assistants must be able to take on projects on their own and deal well with tight deadlines. They also need to know when to seek guidance before proceeding. Interns/Project assistants are normally hired for a three-month term, with the option to extend one time depending on performance and fit.

 

Primary Responsibilities: 

Assist with logistical arrangements for visiting delegations and international conferences

Assist with booking international travel

Assist in interacting with VIPs

Draft correspondence to external organizations and contacts

Research issues of interest to legislatures

Draft blog posts and contribute to Governance team social media accounts

Update computerized database of experts and trainers

Update files on countries/programs

Conduct special projects as needed

Provide administrative support to the Governance team with duties such as scheduling, filing, faxing, copying, and mailings

Record minutes/notes of in-house meetings and draft summary memos

 

Qualifications:

Undergraduate studies or degree in development studies, public policy, international affairs, political science, or a related field, or equivalent experience

Ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff, US and foreign government personnel, foreign dignitaries, and NGO community

Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously

Demonstrated resourcefulness and ability to solve problems creatively

Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail

Good oral and written communication skills to present information effectively and respond to questions

Capacity to work both independently and as a member of a team

Working knowledge of PC-based word processing and spreadsheet applications

Working knowledge of basic budget and accounting procedures

Desired Skills:

Foreign-language skills, especially Spanish fluency

Demonstrated interest in urban planning & policy

Experience with event planning

Familiarity with USG grant programs, regulations, visa processes, etc.

Exposure to legislative processes

Demonstrated interest in digital media and governance innovation

Graphic-design and/or multimedia production

Experience with budgeting and accounting procedures

Experience with Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, G+, etc.)
