ABOUT THE POSITION
Everytown for Gun Safety seeks a Deputy Research Director to manage the research efforts that support its research goals.
The ideal candidate will have experience conceptualizing and conducting exceptional research, working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with a range of colleagues and departments. Reporting to the Research Director, the Deputy Research Director will directly manage a team of two and will oversee high impact and high profile research projects that span numerous departments and partner organizations.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Strategy and Research Development
Lead the development and execution of effective advocacy-based research, working closely with the Director of Research and a range of Everytown leaders and staff across the organization (e.g.: Digital, Communications, State Legislative Affairs, etc.)
Provide practical and innovative ideas on potential research projects, reports, advocacy, communications, and outreach
Support the Research Director in developing the legislative research agenda, establishing both short- and long-term priorities; adapt research plans based on insights and opportunities as they arise
Publish analytical and credible reports, compelling advocacy materials, and other research-based products to support Everytown's legislative goals
Represent Everytown in regional, national, and local media through interviews, in testimony in front of legislative bodies, and at high-level conferences on gun violence prevention activities, in keeping with the organization's focus
Connect with outside organizations, policy makers, law enforcement, and others impacted by gun violence and gun safety policies to develop research priorities and gather information
People and Project Management
Manage, mentor, and guide staff of two, overseeing research activities and supporting professional development and learning
Work closely with cross functional teams, as appropriate, overseeing projects that inform Everytown's legislative strategy and support Everytown's progress toward goals
Lead quality control and ensure a high-quality process for all state and legislative research
Interact regularly with Everytown staff across all departments to ensure effective coordination and delivery of research program
Regularly monitor the budget and ensure that resources dedicated to state and federal legislative campaigns are allocated appropriately
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
Minimum five years of experience in advocacy-based research or a similar field, with at least two years of experience managing people and/or teams, with proven success
Passion and skill for research, with the ability to break complex questions into components and address them systematically
Strong critical thinking skills, with the ability to develop problem-solving strategies and adapt those strategies as needed
Understanding of the legislative process, with a sense of how legislators digest information; ability to tailor persuasive messages for legislative audience
Track record managing complex projects across multiple departments and/or stakeholder groups
Experience effectively managing and mentoring teams, supporting staff to grow skills and develop professionally
Exceptional judgment and communication skills, including the ability to discuss difficult topics directly and productively
Exceptional writing skills, with demonstrated success writing, editing, and proofreading in rapid response environment
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, campaign-like environment on a growing, diverse team
Passion for collaboration, with a belief that teamwork is dream-work Advanced degree in Law, Policy, Journalism, or similar field
